A Dollar for the Future: A Bitcoin Time Capsule Beneath a Century-Old Stairway

Recently, the grange of which I am a member undertook repairs to a set of historic stone steps that had served the community for well over one hundred years. Time and weather had taken their toll, and it was clear that the steps needed restoration if they were to continue serving future generations.

As work progressed, someone suggested an idea that quickly captured everyone's imagination: before the repaired stones were set in place, we would create a time capsule for the people who might one day repair these same steps a century from now.

The capsule became a snapshot of our time. Members contributed various items that represented everyday life in the 2020s. There were menus from local restaurants, including our neighborhood pizza shop. Newspapers, notes, and other contemporary items were included to give future discoverers a glimpse into our community and how we lived.

I decided to contribute something a little different.

Rather than placing a dollar bill in the capsule, I created a brand-new Bitcoin wallet and deposited one dollar worth of Bitcoin, measured in satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin). Along with the wallet, I included the public address, the seed phrase needed to recover the wallet, and detailed instructions explaining what Bitcoin is and how future generations could access the funds.

My hope is that whoever opens the capsule many decades from now will not only discover a piece of financial history, but also witness the extraordinary journey of a technology that was still relatively young when the capsule was buried.

A paper dollar placed in the capsule today would likely have little more than sentimental value a hundred years from now. Inflation steadily reduces the purchasing power of currency over time. The Bitcoin, however, represents an experiment. No one knows what one dollar's worth of Bitcoin today might be worth in 100 years. It could be worth very little, or it could represent a surprisingly valuable gift from the past.

More importantly, it tells a story.

The century-old stone steps remind us that communities are built by people who think beyond their own lifetimes. The original builders of those steps likely never imagined who would eventually repair them. Likewise, we cannot know who will uncover our time capsule. Yet by leaving behind pieces of our lives, our technology, and our hopes for the future, we create a connection across generations.

Perhaps, one hundred years from now, a group of volunteers will once again lift those stones for repairs. They will discover restaurant menus from businesses long gone, notes from people they never knew, and a Bitcoin wallet created by someone who wanted to leave a small piece of the digital age behind.

When that day comes, I hope they smile at the thought that beneath these old stone steps, we left them not just a collection of objects, but a message: we were here, this is how we lived, and we were thinking about you.
